Teaching Languages with Tabletop Role-Playing Games (e.g. Dungeons & Dragons): Hands-On Classroom Methods

This course is designed for language teachers who want to use tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) —such as Dungeons & Dragons—as a structured and effective methodology for foreign language teaching.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of tabletop RPGs as an educational medium. Core game mechanics, narrative structures, player roles, and facilitation techniques, as well as the pedagogical foundations that make RPGs effective for language learning, including motivation, interaction, and task-based learning.

The course is fully practical and classroom-oriented. Teachers learn how to apply RPG structures to develop vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and writing skills at proficiency levels from A1 to C1. Participants design RPG-based lesson plans, adapt scenarios to different age groups and contexts, and practice assessment and feedback strategies aligned with language learning objectives.

Participants will work with selected tabletop RPG materials, including simplified rule sets, narrative frameworks, and printable classroom resources. Digital tools may include shared documents, online whiteboards, and optional virtual tabletop platforms to support lesson design and collaboration. All participants receive course materials, sample lesson plans, and templates adaptable for primary, secondary, and adult language education.
